I labirinti giardino (Irrgarten)
"Dentro è di muri inestricabil

che mille torce in sé confusi giri,

Dal mito di Teseo e del Minotauro che aveva attraversato indenne
i secoli [...] il labirinto rimbalzò nel giardino e ne costituì
uno dei luoghi più significativi con una varietà di realizzazioni
che corrispondeva a esigenze diverse.
Divenne un gioco di parterre con fiori e delimitazioni basse, un percorso
fra statue e fontane, un intrico di muri vegetali che superavano l'altezza
dell'uomo, una vera e propria "prigione" di strutture arboree
imponenti ed elaborate infoltite da bassi cespugli per impedire la fuga.
Per mezzo dell'arte topiaria il labirinto trasferì nel mondo artificiale
del giardino la più elementare significativa paura dell'uomo: quella
di smarrirsi in un bosco.
